Our friends at The Good Music Club put on free monthly shows where music fans can experience Austin artists while they tape the recordings for their weekly web video series. The series is available on KUT radio’s website and The Austin Chronicle’s Earache! music blog. KUT’s own Laurie Gallardo selects the music and tapings are filmed by API Productions.
The Good Music Club’s latest offering is psychedelic prog rock power trio The Boxing Lesson, led by frontman Paul Waclawsky. Waclawsky and keyboardist Jaylinn Davidson brought their unique sound to Austin from Los Angeles after his gear was stolen. The story has a happy ending though, as The Boxing Lesson have put down roots in Austin. Oh yeah, and the gear was later recovered.
Drummer Matt Bongirno rounds out the trio. This is a band to be reckoned with as their February 2012 release “Health is the New Drug” has garnered high praise.
During our own vivogig podcast interview back on March 7, 2011, Waclawsky and Davidson revealed that their songs are largely inspired by cats and that they love the trippy, psychedelic sound, listing Pink Floyd as a major inspiration.
Waclawsky spoke to us about their amazing taping for The Good Music Club. “The show at the ND was the hottest and sweatiest we can remember!” He also emphasized the impact of The Good Music Club and how The Boxing Lesson was gratified to be a part of their latest free live taping.
“We are proud to be a part of the Good Music Club, and think that they are doing a wonderful job of increasing the exposure of Austin bands,” said Waclawsky. “It’s really bringing the scene together in a unique way. Bands are getting a chance to play with other acts that they usually wouldn’t line shows up with, and it’s expanding fan bases and making a stronger musical community.”
Check out the prog-psych rockers big sound.
